In 2014, Race Results, VFT Racing, World Supersport

Italy’s Fabio Menghi put the frustration of a technical problem in qualifying behind him to grab 7 points with a 9th place finish in round one of the 2014 World Supersport championship at Phillip Island earlier today.

The VFT Yamaha team had worked hard overnight to fix the issue which meant Menghi, who had impressed with his speed in the official tests, would start the race from 15th on the grid. Fabio had qualified 16th, completing only 4 laps before the problem, but with compatriot Lorenzo Zanetti ruled out of the race through injury, Menghi was moved forward onto row 5.

Lap one was frantic with several riders running off line and with a tightly bunched field all making it successfully around the picturesque Australian venue, Fabio found himself in 18th position.

As the race settled down, Menghi found his groove and began to work his way through the pack.

Lap 8 and the red flag came out because of a technical issue to a competitor’s machine laid oil on the track. This meant a shortened race of 5 laps with Fabio lining up 14th on the grid.

The restart was uneventful and Fabio proved that his pre-event was no fluke as he took his VFT Yamaha to a well-earned 9th place at the flag.

Fabio Menghi – VFT Racing Yamaha: “After the problems yesterday this is a good result for us. I want to thank all my team, my sponsors and my family and friends for believing in me. This result is for them because I could feel them with me in that race. I can go to Aragon for the next race with a smile on my face.”

Round 2 of the World Supersport championship takes places in Spain in April.
