Italy’s Fabio Menghi suffered a high speed qualifying crash in today’s sole grid deciding session ahead of the 5th round of the World Supersport championship at a wet Donington Park.
As at the previous round a fortnight ago, Menghi and the VFT Racing Yamaha squad elected to focus on race set-up during yesterday’s free practice sessions leaving this morning final free practice session to look for a set-up for qualifying.
With rain falling it was soon clear that qualifying would be wet and after an encouraging morning session Fabio was optimistic.
With the rain easing slightly, Menghi was one of the first on track, keen to capitalise on the slightly improved conditions.
Running comfortably inside the top ten when the rain began to fall heavier once again, Fabio, along with a dozen riders were caught out by the slippery track surface, crashing out of contention thankfully without injury.
Fabio Menghi – VFT Racing Yamaha: “This is the worst qualifying session of my life. In the first part of the session I was inside the top ten but I crashed and although I thought that I could make it back to the garage, I was too far away, on the opposite side of the track and wasn’t able to. Tomorrow it can only be better so we will repair the bike and be ready to fight in the race.”
With the weather for tomorrow’s 20 lap race unpredictable, Menghi will begin from 23rd position on the grid.
Menghi è positivo nonostante una qualifica sfortunata
L’italiano Fabio Menghi è caduto ad alta velocità nell’unico turno di qualifiche del quinto round del Campionato Mondiale Supersport sul tracciato bagnatissimo di Donington Park.
Come nel precedente round di due settimane fa, Menghi ed il team VFT Racing Yamaha, hanno scelto di concentrarsi sul set up per la gara durante le sessioni di prove libere di ieri, lasciando a questa mattina, nell’ultima sessione di prove libere, la ricerca del set-up per le qualifiche.
Con la pioggia, presente già dalla mattina, era chiaro sin da subito che la qualificazione sarebbe stata bagnata e, dopo una sessione mattutina incoraggiante, Fabio era ottimista.
Menghi è stato uno dei primi piloti a scendere in pista, per cercare di sfruttare le condizioni migliori dell’asfalto.
L’italiano era comodamente nella top ten quando la pioggia ha iniziato a cadere più forte e Fabio, come una dozzina di piloti in pista, è stato tradito dall’asfalto scivoloso. L’italiano è caduto ma per fortuna senza riportare danni.
Fabio Menghi – VFT Racing Yamaha: “Questa è stata la qualifica peggiore della mia vita. Nella prima parte della sessione ero dentro la top ten, ma sono caduto ed anche se ho pensato che avrei potuto tornare al box, che era comunque molto lontano, sul lato opposto della pista, non ho potuto farlo. Domani può andare solo meglio di così. Ripareremo la moto per essere pronti a combattere in gara“.
