Josh Harland tastes EJC victory first time out but may not make the 2012 grid

Carlos Checa may have won the WSBK title at Magny – Cours. Chaz Davies may have triumphed in WSS, but there was another young up and coming English rider being talked about as the sun set over the French circuit after a thrilling day of racing back in October…Josh Harland.

The quiet, unassuming youngster has endured a torrid time following his arrival within the BSB paddock a couple of seasons ago.

A qualifying crash at Knockhill, Scotland (which shattered his leg) in his debut season of 125cc competition dented his confidence and a 2011 season struggling on an uncompetitive machine in Superstock 600 had left the likeable lad from York searching for a chance to prove his talent and speed.

That chance came at the penultimate round of the 2011 World Superbike Championship.

The European Junior Cup (EJC) runs at the European rounds of the WSBK series and offers up and coming youngsters from all over the world the chance to compete on the World stage on equal Kawasaki 250cc machinery.

Impressing everyone throughout the weekend (including former Moto GP winner Simon Crafar), Josh qualified on the front row of the grid having never seen the circuit or ridden the machine before and after a frantic battle which included proven races winners went on to take an emphatic victory. Not bad for someone who had never previously scored a British Championship point.

Josh has the talent, is a media dream and is desperate to contest the full European Junior Cup next year. As it stands the youngster starts 2012 uncertain if he will even turn a wheel on track. If sufficient funding cannot be raised he will not be on the grid anywhere let alone in the prestigious World Superbike paddock.

Those already involved with Josh’s journey to the top are convinced that if he makes the starting line up for the opening round at Assen in April you would be hard pressed to bet against him challenging for the 2012 title.

Any financial support will be greatly received and there are a number of sponsorship opportunities as well as membership to the ‘Josh Harland 250 Supporters Club’ on offer.
